Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the Agargaon-Motijheel part of Dhaka Metro Rail MRT Line-6 on October 29 instead of October 20.
"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Agargaon-Motijheel part of Dhaka Metro Rail MRT Line-6 on October 29," said ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Secretary of Road Transport and Highways Division.
With the opening of Agargaon-Motijheel section, commuters will avail the service from Uttara to Motijheel, he said.
The secretary said the high-speed trains will help reduce carbon emissions . . . reduce traffic, adding, "It will take just 40 minutes from Uttara to Motijheel. Now commuters need from one and a half to two hours to go by bus or private cars."
Earlier, on December 28, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the first phase of the first ever metro rail from Uttara to Agargaon.
Managing Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) MAN Siddique earlier said the metro rail is expected to reduce public sufferings. Metro rail will be able to transport more passengers in a less time with comfortable means.
Each train can run at a speed of 100 to 110 km with 2,300 passengers. However, the speed will be lower in areas with bends.
After assuming power in 2009, the Awami League government took various initiatives to reduce the pressure on the capital. Initiatives were taken to build metro rail across the capital to ease traffic congestion, according to the project details.
